Kenya Loses a Political Titan: Raila Odinga Dies at 80

Ghana joins Kenya in mourning the passing of former Prime Minister and prominent opposition figure, Raila Odinga, who died at the age of 80. Family sources confirmed his death to the BBC, stating he passed away on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment in India.

Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics for decades, ran for president five times, each time claiming electoral fraud after losing. While he never achieved the presidency, his influence on the nation's political landscape was undeniable. He was instrumental in challenging the 2017 election results, which led to the Supreme Court annulling Uhuru Kenyatta's victory and ordering a rerun. However, Odinga boycotted the second election, calling for electoral reforms.

Despite his long history as an opposition leader, Odinga often sought reconciliation with sitting presidents. Following his defeat in 2022, he joined President William Ruto in a broad-based government, bringing many of his allies into important positions. He argued this move was essential for national unity after widespread protests last year.

The Ruto administration even supported Odinga's bid for chairperson of the African Union Commission earlier this year, but he was ultimately unsuccessful.

Odinga, affectionately known as "Baba," "Agwambo," and "Tinga" by his supporters, inspired a passionate following, particularly in western Kenya where he was from. He was widely considered a master strategist and a powerful mobilizer, capable of drawing massive crowds to his rallies. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape Kenyan politics for years to come.

Ghana sends its condolences to the people of Kenya during this difficult time.
