KNUST Triumphs at National Insurance Debate: Promoting Youth Awareness

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has emerged victorious in the inaugural National Inter-Schools Insurance Debate, held at the Insurance House in Accra. KNUST secured the win against College of Education, Ada, with a score of 83.0 to 78.0 in the final round of the 2025 edition.

Debate Focus: Insurance as a Human Right

The motion debated in the final was a thought-provoking one: “Insurance should be treated as a fundamental human right rather than a commercial product.” This highlighted the importance of access to insurance and its potential impact on individual well-being.

Promoting Insurance Awareness Among Youth

The nationwide debate was organized by the Insurance Awareness Coordinators Group (IACG) in collaboration with the National Insurance Commission, the Ghana Insurers Association, and other industry players. The initiative aims to boost insurance awareness among young people, foster trust in the insurance sector, encourage critical thinking on insurance-related matters, and strengthen collaboration between the insurance industry and academic institutions.

Nationwide Engagement

The journey to the final involved visits to 20 tertiary institutions across the southern and northern zones of Ghana. Despite initial logistical challenges, the organizers successfully engaged with the schools, leading to zonal competitions held in Accra (Southern Zone) and Kumasi (Northern Zone).

  • The Southern Zone competition took place at Insurance House in Accra.
  • The Northern Zone competition was hosted at KNUST in Kumasi.

The zonal competitions saw participation from 16 schools, with debates centered on crucial questions such as the compulsory nature of insurance and whether insurance serves as a protection or an infringement of freedom.

The organizers hope that this initiative will lead to the establishment of insurance clubs in tertiary institutions, further promoting insurance literacy and engagement among students.
