Several major airlines, including Emirates, are implementing stricter regulations regarding the use of portable chargers (power banks) on flights due to growing safety concerns. This move follows a series of incidents involving overheating and potential fire hazards associated with these devices.

Emirates' New Power Bank Policy

Emirates has announced a complete prohibition on the use of portable chargers within the aircraft cabin, effective October 1, 2025. The airline is also advising passengers against using power banks to charge devices or charging power banks using the aircraft's power outlets.

While the airline is implementing these strict rules, some exceptions apply. Passengers are permitted to carry one power bank with a capacity under 100 Watts. However, these power banks must be stored either in the seat pocket or in a bag placed under the seat in front of them, and are prohibited from being placed in overhead storage bins.

Why the Sudden Change?

The airlines emphasize the need for a proactive and firm stance to mitigate potential risks associated with power banks onboard. A recent incident involving a flight from São Paulo to Amsterdam, which was forced to make an emergency landing due to an overheating power bank filling the cabin with smoke, highlights the severity of the issue.

Michelle Compton from Corporate Traveller explains that power banks have always presented a risk, which is why they are typically required to be carried in carry-on bags rather than checked luggage. This allows passengers to monitor the device and address any issues that may arise. Factors such as air cabin pressure and friction during transit can also contribute to potential hazards.

Passengers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the specific power bank policies of their airline before traveling to avoid any inconvenience or delays.
