Western Pennsylvania is bracing for a weekend of unsettled weather, with Pittsburgh and Lancaster County both expecting periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potentially gusty winds. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect:
Pittsburgh Weather Forecast
Pittsburgh started Friday with patchy fog, particularly near and northwest of the metro area. This is due to light winds and high humidity. As the day progresses, instability will build, leading to scattered thunderstorms developing between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. These storms could bring localized microbursts with winds up to 60 mph, heavy rain, and small hail.
The storm activity is expected to shift south toward the I-70 and I-68 corridors during the late evening and overnight hours of Saturday. Saturday itself should be drier, offering a brief respite before more moisture returns on Sunday. Sunday could bring showers and thunderstorms again during the midday to afternoon, with an isolated severe storm possible south of Pittsburgh.
A more significant storm system is expected to arrive on Monday, bringing further unsettled weather.
Lancaster County Weather Forecast
Lancaster County is also facing a rainy and windy weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook, warning of heavy rain and gusty winds for Friday night. Rainfall is expected to continue through the weekend, potentially leading to minor flooding issues into Sunday. A tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain is expected each day.
Despite the wet forecast, Lancaster County recently experienced a very wet May, with 7.49 inches of rain recorded. This rainfall helped to end an eight-month drought in the area. A brief return to sunny skies is expected on Monday before more rain arrives on Tuesday and Wednesday.
