Hurricane Erin Aftermath: Flooding, Damage, and State of Emergency!
Hurricane Erin Leaves Trail of Flooding and Disruption
Hurricane Erin, after churning in the North Atlantic, has left behind a trail of coastal flooding, dangerous surf conditions, and disruption along the U.S. East Coast. While the storm itself is moving northeast and transitioning into a post-tropical cyclone, its impact continues to be felt, particularly in areas like the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the Jersey Shore.
New Jersey Declares State of Emergency
Governor Phil Murphy declared a State of Emergency across all 21 counties in New Jersey in anticipation of Hurricane Erin's effects. The state is experiencing coastal and flash flooding, dangerous surf warnings, and high winds. Some areas are predicted to have sustained winds of up to 50 mph and waves as high as 17 feet.
"Over the past couple of days, we have seen the effects of Hurricane Erin along the Jersey Shore in the form of dangerous rip tides. Today and tomorrow will be no exception,” said Governor Murphy.
Outer Banks Grapples with Flooding
In North Carolina, NC 12 in the Outer Banks remains closed due to overwash and flooding. Oceanfront neighborhoods have experienced flooding, and homes have sustained damage. While the hurricane is moving away, the lingering effects, especially during high tides, are causing continued challenges.
Gov. Josh Stein is scheduled to visit the coast to assess the damage and thank first responders for their efforts. Crews are working to remove water and sand from the roadway.
Erin's Unusual Size and Track
Meteorologists have noted the unusual size of Hurricane Erin. According to Michael Lowry, Erin ranks among the top 4% of Atlantic hurricanes in terms of size over the past 60 years. Its track also brought it unusually close to the U.S. East Coast for a hurricane of its magnitude.
Looking Ahead
While Hurricane Erin is weakening and transitioning into a post-tropical cyclone, residents along the East Coast are urged to remain vigilant and monitor local weather forecasts. The dangers of rip currents, coastal flooding, and high winds may persist for several days. Stay informed and follow the guidance of local authorities to ensure your safety.
