Yankees Stick With Volpe Despite Recent Struggles

The New York Yankees are continuing to defend shortstop Anthony Volpe, despite his recent struggles both offensively and defensively. In a recent game against the Boston Red Sox, Volpe's questionable decision-making on a ground ball led to a free base runner, drawing criticism from fans and even Yankee legend Paul O'Neill.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the mistake but defended Volpe's overall awareness, highlighting a subsequent play where Volpe threw out a runner at the plate. However, the incident underscores Volpe's inconsistency and raises questions about his place in the lineup.

Boone Benches Volpe Amid Slump

Adding fuel to the fire, Volpe was benched for Sunday's game against the Red Sox, with Jose Caballero taking his place at shortstop. Boone cited Volpe's offensive slump, noting that he has only eight hits in his last 18 games and has struck out 18 times during that span. Defensively, Volpe leads the league with 16 errors and ranks poorly in Outs Above Average.

"He’s just scuffling a little offensively over the past week,” Boone said. “Having Caballero now he gives you that real utility presence where he can play anywhere including short, and the spark that he provides so we just felt today was a good day for that.”

Boone didn't commit to Volpe returning to the lineup immediately, leaving his future role uncertain.

Cruz Returns to Bolster Bullpen

In other news, the Yankees are set to activate Fernando Cruz from the injured list. Cruz, who has been sidelined with an oblique strain, is expected to provide a boost to the team's bullpen. Prior to his injury, Cruz had a 3.00 ERA in 32 appearances.

"He’s been super productive for us and a such an important part,” Boone said. “He’s just a great person and competitor -- he’s willing to take the ball in so many different areas, so I’m looking forward to getting him back.”
