In a surprising move, the Cleveland Browns have released veteran kicker Dustin Hopkins as they trimmed their roster to the required 53 players. Hopkins, a 12th-year veteran, struggled with consistency last season, and those issues appeared to carry over into the preseason, ultimately leading to his departure.

Hopkins' Rollercoaster Ride in Cleveland

Hopkins' time with the Browns was a tale of two seasons. Acquired in a late August trade in 2023, he initially impressed, making 8-of-8 field goals from 50+ yards and setting an NFL record by connecting on one from that distance in five consecutive games. He also set a franchise record with 33 made field goals, despite missing the final two games due to injury. However, his performance dipped significantly in 2024, making only 9-of-16 field goals from 40 yards or more. He was even benched for a game in December due to his struggles.

Szmyt's Opportunity

With Hopkins gone, rookie Andre Szmyt out of Syracuse is currently the Browns' kicker. Szmyt, originally signed by the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2023, spent part of the 2024 season on the Browns’ practice squad. He solidified his position by making a game-winning 37-yard field goal in the preseason finale against the Rams. However, the Browns may still explore other options among the league-wide roster cuts.

The Browns also made other roster moves, including placing Deshaun Watson (Achilles) on reserve/Physically Unable to Perform, meaning he'll miss at least the first four games of the season. Defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. (knee) passed his physical and remains on the active roster.

The release of Hopkins saves the Browns $2.8 million against the salary cap in 2025, although $1.2 million of that was guaranteed.
