Remembering Alison Parker & Adam Ward: A Decade Later, Their Legacy Lives On
Ten years have passed since the tragic loss of Alison B. Parker and Adam Ward, two journalists whose lives were cut short during a live broadcast. Their memory, however, continues to inspire and uplift those who knew them and those who have learned about their dedication and passion.
Alison Parker: A Fierce Journalist with a Kind Heart
Alison B. Parker, a James Madison University (JMU) alumna, former WHSV intern, and reporter with WDBJ7, is remembered for her tenacity and unwavering commitment to journalism. Brad Jenkins, general manager and adviser for The Breeze, JMU’s student-run news organization, recalls Parker's "fierce journalistic ability" coupled with a "sweet, kind personality." He often shares her story during tours of the Alison B. Parker Studio at JMU.
Parker's problem-solving skills were also remarkable. Jenkins recounted an instance where a truck was blocking her live shot. Parker, without hesitation, asked the driver to move it, showcasing her determination to get the story.
The Alison B. Parker Memorial Scholarship supports incoming freshmen and rising seniors within the School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD) who share her passion for journalism.
Adam Ward: Laughter, Kindness, and a Lasting Legacy
Adam Ward, a WDBJ7 photographer, is remembered for his humor, kindness, and love of sports. Grant Smythers, his former teacher at Salem High School, fondly recalls Ward's playful teasing and generous spirit. Ward's enthusiasm was evident at basketball games, where he would often paint his chest in support of the team.
The Adam Ward Classic, an annual basketball tournament, is a testament to his enduring legacy. The tournament raises scholarship money to help students achieve their dreams of attending college. The Adam Ward Scholarship seeks students with "Adam-like qualities": hard work, high character, and a friendly nature.
A Lasting Impact
Kate Debord McMillan, a scholarship recipient who met both Parker and Ward during a middle school interview, says she remembers them being full of joy, showing up bright and early in the morning. McMillan now works in healthcare, inspired to make a difference after facing health problems as a teen.
The memories of Alison Parker and Adam Ward continue to resonate, reminding us of their dedication, kindness, and the lasting impact they had on their community.
