Medvedev Fined Heavily After US Open Outburst

Daniil Medvedev has been slapped with a hefty $42,500 fine following his dramatic outburst at the US Open. The penalties stem from unsportsmanlike conduct and racket abuse during his first-round match, a significant dent considering he earned $110,000 for his appearance at Flushing Meadows.

The breakdown of the fine includes $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for racket abuse. The incident occurred during his match against Benjamin Bonzi when a photographer inadvertently stepped onto the court while Bonzi was serving.

What Triggered the Outburst?

The disruption caused the chair umpire, Greg Allensworth, to order Bonzi to retake his first serve, which ignited Medvedev's fury. He confronted the umpire, questioning his decisions and referencing a previous incident involving Reilly Opelka.

"Are you a man? Are you a man? Why are you shaking?" Medvedev reportedly shouted at the umpire, adding, "He wants to go home, guys, he doesn’t like it here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour."

The match was halted for approximately six minutes as the crowd voiced their disapproval with jeers and whistles. Bonzi even threatened to walk off the court and called for Medvedev's disqualification. Although Medvedev managed to rally briefly, Bonzi ultimately won the match in five sets.

The United States Tennis Association confirmed that the photographer involved was escorted from the court, and their credentials were revoked. Medvedev's actions, including repeatedly hitting his racket at the end of the match, contributed to the severity of the fine. The incident serves as a reminder of the intense pressure and emotions involved in high-stakes tennis competitions.
