Michigan Wolverines Face Unknown in Season Opener vs. New Mexico!
The Michigan Wolverines kick off their 146th season against the New Mexico Lobos this Saturday at Michigan Stadium. This marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs, adding an element of the unknown to the contest. While Michigan is only two years removed from their 2023 National Championship victory, New Mexico is undergoing a significant transformation.
New Mexico's Overhaul Presents a Challenge
New Mexico's roster has seen massive turnover, boasting the fewest returning players in FBS (34) and the most newcomers (75). Head coach Jason Eck, in his first season with the Lobos, brought in seven players from his previous stop at Idaho, including quarterback Jack Layne. Layne, who posted impressive stats last season (14 touchdowns, 4 interceptions in 6 games), will be a key player to watch.
Scouting the Lobos
Despite the Wolverines being heavily favored, the Lobos have offensive weapons. Running back Damon Bankston transferred from Weber State where he led in rushing with 1,104 yards and 6 touchdowns. Keyshawn James-Newby will be one to watch on the defensive end.
Michigan Prepares for the Unknown
Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey acknowledged the challenges of preparing for a team with a new coaching staff and so many new faces. "The unknown," Lindsey said, "I think the unknown from the standpoint of a new staff... There’s some unknown there with their personnel a little bit, with all the transfers."
Coach Sherrone Moore also noted the tendency for the Lobos to run trick plays, adding another layer of complexity to the Wolverines' preparation. Despite the uncertainties, Michigan aims to start the season strong in front of a roaring crowd at the Big House.
The game will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock, with Noah Eagle, Todd Blackledge, and Kathryn Tappen on the call. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
