Iga Swiatek SHOCKED by US Open Question! You Won't Believe What Was Asked!
Iga Swiatek, the world's No. 2 tennis player, is facing more than just tough opponents at the US Open. It seems the media is also presenting a unique challenge to the six-time Grand Slam champion.
After a hard-fought three-set victory against Suzan Lamens on Thursday, Swiatek found herself fielding some rather unusual questions during the post-match press conference. One reporter inquired whether she would consider wearing beads in her hair, seemingly referencing Naomi Osaka's signature style. Swiatek's reaction was one of visible annoyance and bewilderment.
"What kind of question is that, excuse me? If I wanted to weave beads in my hair? No," Swiatek responded, clearly taken aback. "What’s going on?"
The questioning didn't stop there. She was also asked about a heated exchange between Jelena Ostapenko and Taylor Townsend following their match. Swiatek's response was measured, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the tennis world while acknowledging broader societal changes.
"I can’t speak about every sport, because I don’t have enough knowledge, you know. We’re in this environment, we’re in the tennis world, we’re thinking about tennis mostly," Swiatek explained. "But, you know, I think obviously the world’s changed throughout the years, and I know that there has been some issue yesterday, but honestly, I was so focused, I had [an] early match, so I wasn’t really — I’m not caught up on that. I’m probably going to catch up today. But you can’t really judge from a behavior of one person the whole community."
Looking ahead, Swiatek is set to face Anna Kalinskaya in the third round on Saturday. A victory would pit her against either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Laura Siegemund in the Round of 16. The path to a US Open title is never easy, and Iga Swiatek is learning that it involves navigating both on-court challenges and unexpected inquiries off the court.
Swiatek's Road Ahead
- Third Round: Anna Kalinskaya
- Round of 16 (potential): Ekaterina Alexandrova or Laura Siegemund
