Houston Weather Alert: Labor Day Weekend Storms! Will Your Plans Wash Away?
Houston Weather: Navigating Labor Day Weekend Storms
Houstonians, brace yourselves! While Labor Day weekend is traditionally a time for outdoor fun and relaxation, Mother Nature has other plans. According to FOX 26 Meteorologist Allison Gargaro, expect showers to come in waves, potentially impacting your holiday activities. The good news? A significant severe weather risk isn't anticipated, but street flooding remains a concern.
Flood Advisories in Effect
- A Flood Advisory is currently in effect for parts of Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria Counties until 2:45 p.m.
- Another advisory covers a portion of Montgomery County until 3 p.m.
- Residents in these areas should be vigilant for minor flooding in low-lying and poorly drained locations.
Airport Ground Stops
If you're flying in or out of Houston this weekend, be aware that ground stops are in effect for both Bush (IAH) and Hobby (HOU) Airports due to the storms. According to the FAA, the ground stop for IAH is in effect until 2 p.m., while the Hobby stop lasts until 2:15 p.m. There's a 30-60% chance these stops could be extended, so check with your airline for the latest updates.
Sunday's Flood Risk
Sunday poses the highest risk of isolated street flooding. The FOX26 viewing area is at a 2/4 risk, with some locations potentially receiving 2-4 inches of rain in a short period. Remember: never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don't drown!
Looking Ahead
The good news is that relief is on the horizon! Rain chances and humidity are expected to decrease starting Tuesday, with more pleasant temperatures arriving by midweek. So, while Labor Day weekend might be a bit soggy, better weather is just around the corner.
