During a CME, the sun ejects huge clouds of ionized gas (plasma) and magnetic fields into space at incredible speeds – NOAA estimates around 2 million miles per hour! When this material reaches Earth, it interacts with atoms and molecules in our upper atmosphere, causing them to glow in various colors. Oxygen, for example, glows green and red.
