Jahmai Jones Joins Detroit Tigers: A Family Legacy Continues

The Detroit Tigers have called up outfielder Jahmai Jones from Triple-A Toledo, adding a fresh face to their roster. This move allows Jones to follow in the footsteps of his brother, former Lions wide receiver T.J. Jones, and his father, Andre Jones, a former Lions linebacker. Jones signed a minor-league deal with the Tigers during the offseason and was a near-miss for the Opening Day roster.
Jones's arrival comes as the Tigers optioned infielder Andy Ibáñez to Triple-A Toledo after struggling against left-handed pitchers. Ibáñez was hitting just .200 with a .578 OPS against lefties since July 21, 2024. Manager A.J. Hinch hopes a stint in Toledo will allow Ibáñez to regain his form.
In 52 games for Triple-A Toledo, Jones has posted a .276/.392/.482 slash line with 29 RBI, six home runs, and eight stolen bases. His performance earned him the call-up to Comerica Park, where he joined the team just in time for the series opener against the Chicago Cubs.
"Detroit’s got a special place in my heart just because of the family ties," Jones told reporters. "Being able to do it myself and add to it is everything I could ask for."

Jones is expected to fill the platoon role previously held by Ibáñez, offering a right-handed bat against left-handed pitching, but this time in the outfield. Hinch praised Jones's hitting ability and decision-making, noting his "thump" at the plate.
