Jon Jones CLEARED! Charges Dropped in Car Crash Case - What Happened?
UFC star Jon Jones has been cleared of all criminal charges stemming from a car accident that occurred in February. According to reports, the State of New Mexico dismissed misdemeanor charges against Jones after his alibi defense was deemed credible.
The Allegations Against Jones
In June, police charged Jones with leaving the scene of a traffic accident and using a telephone to “terrify, intimidate, threaten, harass, annoy or offend.” These charges stemmed from an incident where police responded to a car crash report. A woman in the passenger seat of one of the vehicles claimed Jones was driving and fled the scene on foot. She also alleged that a man on the phone, identified as Jones, appeared intoxicated and made threatening statements.
Jones' Defense and the Dismissal
However, the case took a turn when the state filed a Nolle Prosequi (dismissal) on Friday. Court documents revealed that “After further investigation, the State has reason to believe the defendant's alibi defense is credible,” leading to the dismissal of the matter.
Jones' Statement and Attorney's Remarks
Jones released a statement thanking the district attorney's office for vindicating him and criticizing the Albuquerque Police Department. He maintained his innocence, stating he was never at the scene of the accident. His attorney, Christopher A. Dodd, stated that Jones was “fully vindicated” and blamed a false allegation made by a woman trying to avoid a DWI arrest. Dodd also criticized the police for accepting the claim without properly weighing the facts and stated that Jon’s cell phone records proved he was nowhere near the scene of the crash.
Moving Forward
While Jones has been cleared by the justice system, his past history with alcohol-related incidents may affect public perception. However, this legal victory allows him to move forward with his career and personal life without the cloud of these charges hanging over him. The investigation into the handling of the evidence remains ongoing.
