Hawaii is bracing for potential impacts from Hurricane Kiko, prompting Acting Governor Sylvia Luke to issue an emergency proclamation for the entire state. The declaration, made at 1:10 p.m. today, activates emergency measures and resources to protect public health, safety, and welfare.

As of Friday morning, September 5, 2025, Hurricane Kiko, a major hurricane, was located approximately 1,200 miles east-southeast of Hawaii. Forecasters predict the storm will approach the islands as a tropical storm early next week.

What to Expect from Hurricane Kiko

The National Hurricane Center reports that Kiko's maximum sustained winds are currently near 140 mph, with higher gusts. While only minor fluctuations in strength are expected through Saturday, gradual weakening is anticipated by Sunday.

Although Kiko is a relatively small tropical cyclone, hurricane-force winds extend 25 miles from the center, and tropical storm-force winds extend 80 miles.

The latest forecast track shows the center of Kiko passing to the north of the islands as a tropical storm. However, impacts from rain and wind remain a possibility. Swells generated by Kiko are expected to begin reaching the Big Island and Maui by Sunday, potentially producing life-threatening surf and rip currents along east-facing exposures of the Hawaiian Islands late Monday through midweek.

Hawaii Prepares for Potential Impacts

The emergency proclamation allows the Hawaii National Guard to assist civilian authorities and directs all state agencies to cooperate in response efforts. The Major Disaster Fund has also been activated to provide financial resources for emergency actions.

“To ensure the safety and preparedness of our communities, the state and counties will stand ready to mobilize resources to clear debris, secure infrastructure, and respond quickly to any possible damage caused by the storm,” said Acting Governor Sylvia Luke. “We urge residents and visitors to monitor updates, follow official guidance and prepare accordingly.”

Stay Informed and Prepared

Residents and visitors are urged to monitor updates from the HNN First Alert Hurricane Center and other official sources. It's also crucial to ensure that hurricane supplies and preparations are in order. The disaster emergency relief period will continue through Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, unless extended or terminated earlier.

Remember to stay informed, follow official guidance, and prioritize the safety of yourself and your family. Prepare now to mitigate the potential impacts of Hurricane Kiko.
