Reds Edge Mets! Greene Dominates, Sproat Debuts: Wild MLB Action!
CINCINNATI – Hunter Greene was on fire Sunday, tying a season-high with 12 strikeouts as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets 3-2. The victory allowed the Reds to take two of three from New York and climb back above .500. The game also marked the major league debut of Mets pitching prospect Brandon Sproat.
Sproat (0-1) initially impressed, holding the Reds hitless through 5 1/3 innings. However, the Reds rallied, with Noelvi Marte singling, Ely De La Cruz delivering a tiebreaking RBI double, and Austin Hays contributing a run-scoring single.
Hays also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, scoring Marte, who had walked, stolen second, and advanced on a groundout. Greene (6-4) was dominant on the mound, allowing only one hit in seven innings – a third-inning home run by Brett Baty. He unleashed a barrage of high-velocity pitches, throwing 30 pitches at 100 mph or higher, bringing his season total to 346, the most among starting pitchers.
Juan Soto added excitement with his 38th homer in the ninth inning off Tony Santillan. Santillan secured his fifth save when Starling Marte grounded into a double play with two runners on base.
The Mets (76-67) still lead Cincinnati and San Francisco (both 72-71) in the race for the final NL wild card spot. Sproat, a 24-year-old right-hander, is one of three Mets pitching prospects to debut recently, following Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong. This marks the first time the Mets have had three starting pitchers debut within a 21-day period.
Sproat's final line included three runs, three hits, and four walks in six innings, with seven strikeouts. He showcased his high-velocity fastball, averaging 96.1 mph with his fastballs and 95.9 mph with his sinkers. Marte broke up Sproat's no-hit bid with a single to right field in the sixth inning.
The Mets have been actively developing young pitching talent, and Sproat's call-up is seen as another positive step for their playoff aspirations, especially given recent struggles with their rotation. While Sproat had some difficulties in Triple-A earlier in the season, he showed signs of improvement in July.
