Fleury Returns! Penguins Sign Legend to PTO - One Last Game?!
Penguins fans, rejoice! The legendary Marc-Andre Fleury is back in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that they've signed the iconic goaltender to a Professional Tryout (PTO) contract. This isn't just any signing; it's a chance for Fleury to have a 'full-circle' moment with the team where he achieved so much.
President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas emphasized the significance of Fleury's return: 'The entire Penguins organization is honored to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh. Marc means so much to our team, our fans, and the City of Pittsburgh because of the person he is and the example he set.'
Fleury is slated to participate in practice and, more excitingly, will play a portion of the Penguins' preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on September 27th at PPG Paints Arena. It's important to temper expectations, though. This appears to be a celebratory event, allowing Fleury to bid farewell to the fans and the city he called home for so long, rather than a comeback attempt. He recently announced his retirement earlier in the year.
During his 13 seasons with the Penguins (2003-2017), Fleury led the team to three Stanley Cup victories (2009, 2016, and 2017) and etched his name in the franchise record books. He holds the Penguins' records for games played (691), wins (375), and shutouts (44) by a goaltender.
While a full-fledged return isn't in the cards, this PTO allows Penguins fans to see 'Flower' back in black and gold one last time. It's a fitting tribute to a player who is widely regarded as a future Hall of Famer and a true Pittsburgh icon.
What to Expect
Don't expect Fleury to challenge Tristan Jarry, Joel Blomqvist, or Arturs Silovs for a roster spot. Instead, anticipate a nostalgic and emotional send-off as the Penguins honor one of their all-time greats.
