Chiefs' Kelce & Teammates Show Support for Suspended Rashee Rice!
Kansas City Chiefs players are rallying around suspended wide receiver Rashee Rice. In a show of solidarity, several Chiefs, including star tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, sported custom "Free 4" t-shirts during warmups before their Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The "4" references Rice's jersey number.
Rice is currently serving a six-game suspension for his involvement in a multi-car crash last year. He pleaded guilty to two felony charges related to the incident and was sentenced to five years probation and 30 days in jail. The NFL initially sought a longer suspension, but ultimately settled on six games.
The Chiefs are feeling Rice's absence. They lost their Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and wide receiver Xavier Worthy suffered a shoulder injury, further depleting their receiving corps. With Worthy also sidelined for Week 2, Kelce and Marquise Brown are shouldering the offensive load.
Rice had a promising rookie season after being drafted by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He recorded 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season he had 24 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns in four games before suffering a knee injury after colliding with Patrick Mahomes.
The "Free 4" shirts are a clear sign of the team's support for Rice during his suspension. He is eligible to return in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders on October 17. The Chiefs are hoping he can pick up where he left off and contribute to their Super Bowl aspirations once he returns.
