The hockey world is mourning the loss of Ed Giacomin, a Hall of Fame goaltender who spent the majority of his NHL career with the New York Rangers. He passed away on Monday at the age of 86.

Giacomin's impact on the Rangers and the sport of hockey is undeniable. He played 11 seasons with the Blueshirts, becoming a beloved figure among fans and teammates. The Rangers organization released a statement praising Giacomin's contributions, stating, "Eddie Giacomin was an integral member of the New York Rangers for a decade and personified what being a Ranger is all about... You cannot discuss the history of this organization and not immediately think of Eddie."

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Giacomin's journey to the NHL included stops in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League (EHL) and the American Hockey League (AHL). He joined the Rangers in 1965 and quickly established himself as a top goaltender. In the 1966-67 season, he led the NHL in wins and shutouts, earning a spot on the NHL First-Team All-Star.

Giacomin was a five-time All-Star and, along with Gilles Villemure, won the Vezina Trophy in 1970-71, recognizing them as the league's top goaltending tandem. He led the Rangers to the 1972 Stanley Cup Final, a memorable run that ultimately ended in a loss to the Boston Bruins.

After being placed on waivers by the Rangers in 1975, Giacomin finished his career with the Detroit Red Wings. He retired in 1978 with 290 wins and 54 shutouts. His No. 1 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 1989, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.

A Lasting Legacy

Giacomin's influence extended beyond his playing career. He spent time as a broadcaster and an assistant coach for various teams, including the Islanders and Red Wings, and even returned to the Rangers as a goaltending coach.

The NHL Alumni Association also mourned Giacomin's passing, acknowledging his legendary status and contributions to the game. His legacy as a Ranger icon and one of hockey's greatest goaltenders will endure for generations to come.
