Ukraine Drones Target Moscow: Zelenskyy Calls for Putin Accountability
Moscow faced a drone barrage as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy demanded accountability for Vladimir Putin. At least 10 drones were reportedly shot down on approach to the city, according to Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin. Temporary restrictions were put in place at two of the capital's airports due to the incident.
Emergency services responded to the impact sites of the downed drones. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that 67 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight during the attacks targeting Moscow. The Tula region, located south of the capital, also experienced a drone attack on the Azot chemical plant in Novomoskovsk, resulting in a fire caused by falling debris, according to Governor Dmitry Milyaev. Two injuries were reported, and Milyaev assured that the situation was under control.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Counter-Disinformation Center, highlighted the significance of the Azot facility, stating that it produces explosives, including TNT, which is used in artillery shells, aircraft bombs, and missiles.
Meanwhile, Russian forces continued their long-range strikes into Ukraine. Ukraine's air force reported that 49 drones and three missiles were fired into the country. They claimed to have successfully shot down or neutralized 40 drones.
The recent escalation in long-range strike operations by both sides comes even as U.S.-brokered peace talks continue to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. President Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities in response to Russia's intensifying attacks on cities throughout the nation.
