Miami Beach Regal Cinema Closing! What's Replacing It Will SHOCK You!
A landmark is disappearing from Miami Beach. The Regal Cinemas South Beach 18, a fixture on Lincoln Road since 1999, is set to permanently close its doors at the end of September. But what's replacing it is generating buzz and promises to reshape the area's cultural landscape.
The Superhuman Museum: A New Era for Lincoln Road
The Miami Beach planning board has approved plans for a new project: the Superhuman Museum. Local entrepreneur Steve Berke is spearheading the project, envisioning it as a catalyst for the revival of Lincoln Road. The museum, located at 1120 Lincoln Rd. Mall, will feature 17 exhibits designed to redefine Miami Beach’s cultural identity.
The decision to replace the Regal Cinema wasn't without its detractors. The planning board received thousands of letters from residents hoping to save the movie theater. However, board member Brian Elias clarified that Regal is choosing to leave, operating on a month-to-month lease, and the city doesn't have the power to force them to stay.
Regal's Financial Troubles
The closure comes as Regal Cinemas' parent company, Cineworld, filed for bankruptcy in September 2022. According to the Regal Cinema website, the chain remains the second largest in the country, just behind AMC Theaters. Despite this, financial pressures have led to the closure of several locations, including the South Beach location.
Regal Cinemas South Beach 18, which opened on June 16, 1999, boasted a total of 2,799 seats. Its departure marks the end of an era for moviegoers in Miami Beach. The Superhuman Museum aims to fill the void, offering a new and engaging experience for residents and tourists alike.
