Despite crowded terminals and occasional delays, a recent study suggests that travelers are becoming increasingly satisfied with their North American airport experiences. The J.D. Power 2025 North America Airport Satisfaction Study reveals a marginal increase in overall passenger satisfaction scores, rising 10 points from 609 to 619 on a 1,000-point scale.

What's Driving the Satisfaction?

The study, based on over 30,000 surveys from travelers in the U.S. and Canada, identifies improvements in food, beverage, and retail options, as well as enhanced ease of travel through the airport, as key factors contributing to the rise in satisfaction. Many airports have recently completed major renovations, introducing better dining and shopping experiences to terminals. The report emphasizes that airports creating a strong sense of place see significant improvements in satisfaction scores.

Top Airports: Who's Winning?

The study categorizes airports into three groups based on passenger volume: mega, large, and medium. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) secured the top spot in the mega airport category for the second consecutive year. John Wayne Airport in Orange County also maintained its position as the best large airport.

Factors Considered in the Ranking

The annual survey measures seven key factors:

  • Ease of travel through the airport
  • Level of trust with the airport
  • Terminal facilities
  • Airport staff
  • Departure/to airport experience
  • Food, beverage, and retail
  • Arrival/from airport experience

While long lines and record passenger numbers remain challenges, the study highlights that strategic investments in airport amenities and improved travel processes are making a positive impact on traveler satisfaction.
