Eagles' 'Tush Push' Under Fire! Is This the End of the Play?
The Philadelphia Eagles' signature 'Tush Push' play is once again at the center of controversy. In their Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Rams, the Eagles appeared to get away with a false start on the play, sparking renewed debate about its legality and fairness.
Another Missed Call?
The questionable play occurred on the Eagles' first offensive drive, with the team facing a fourth-and-1 situation. Right guard Tyler Steen seemed to move forward before the snap, but no penalty was called. The Eagles subsequently scored a touchdown using the 'Tush Push'.
This comes after the Eagles faced criticism for potential infractions during their Week 2 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Following that game, the NFL reportedly instructed officials to call the play 'tight'.
Former NFL vice president of officiating, Dean Blandino, has expressed his frustration with the play, stating, "I am done with the Tush Push, guys."
Kelce Predicts the End
Adding fuel to the fire, retired Eagles center Jason Kelce believes the 'Tush Push' is nearing its end. "I think the play is done," Kelce said. "I think that there’s a lot of people within the league, at multiple levels, that want the play to be gone."
Kelce argues that the play is no different than defensive linemen ganging up on a running back. However, many within the league disagree, deeming the rugby-style scrum unfair. A proposal to ban the play fell just two votes short at the NFL’s spring owners meeting.
What's Next for the Eagles?
Despite the controversy, the 'Tush Push' remains legal for the 2025 season. The Eagles will likely continue to utilize the play, regardless of the criticism. The question remains: will the NFL eventually ban the 'Tush Push', or will the Eagles continue to dominate with this controversial play?
