Youth Soccer Nightmare: 2nd Coach Arrested! Parents in Shock!
The Modesto youth soccer community is reeling after a second coach from the same non-profit organization was arrested on child pornography charges. Efrain Aguayo Jr., a soccer coach in Modesto, faces serious accusations, echoing a similar arrest of Matthew Paez in July. Both coaches were employed by Ajax United, which operates under the Modesto Youth Soccer Association.
Parents Voice Concerns and Disappointment
The news has sparked outrage and concern among parents. "Dropping your kids off on the field and into the hands of their coach... how can they trust other coaches and other like adults that are around their kids?" said one concerned parent. The sentiment reflects a broader feeling of unease and a questioning of the vetting processes in place.
"My first reaction to that is a little bit of an anger, but more disappointment. And it’s really disheartening, to be honest with you," another parent expressed, highlighting the emotional impact of the situation on the community.
Organization Responds, Emphasizes Background Checks
Ajax United has responded to the arrests, emphasizing the thorough background checks conducted on all coaches. According to the organization, every coach undergoes a live scan, a Department of Justice background check inclusive of all 50 states. They claim the system won't even issue licenses or cards to coaches until those checks are completed.
Following Aguayo’s arrest, the organization stated it immediately reached out to families. However, the repeated incidents raise questions about the effectiveness of current vetting procedures and the potential for future improvements.
Moving Forward: Rebuilding Trust
The Modesto Youth Soccer Association faces a significant challenge in rebuilding trust with parents and the community. A thorough review of existing safety protocols and a commitment to transparency will be crucial steps in ensuring the well-being of young athletes.
