The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is facing scrutiny from the Department of Justice (DOJ) following accusations of providing assistance to illegal migrants. The DOJ's Civil Rights Division sent a letter to UNR on Friday, outlining concerns based on reports of the university's efforts to support undocumented students enrolled at the institution.

Specifically, the DOJ alleges that UNR's UndocuPack office offers resources to undocumented students, including referrals for on-campus and community support, financial aid guidance, and academic assistance. The DOJ further claims that the university directs immigrants towards financial aid, scholarships, and career opportunities that do not require a Social Security Number.

The DOJ's letter also references statements made by UndocuPack director Janet Najera, who reportedly expressed the university's goal to expand the program and enhance support for undocumented students. As a result, the DOJ is referring the matter to the Department of Education, which will investigate whether UNR is using taxpayer funds to subsidize or promote illegal immigration.

UNR responded to the DOJ's accusations with a statement, indicating that the university is reviewing the letter and will respond through the appropriate legal and administrative channels. UNR emphasized its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment for all students while upholding its responsibilities under state and federal law, including the U.S. Constitution.

President Sandoval addressed the campus community, stating that the university received the DOJ correspondence regarding financial aid and academic support resources offered to all students. He reiterated UNR's commitment to upholding its legal responsibilities and fostering an inclusive environment. Sandoval also clarified that the UndocuPack Program is available to all UNR students, receives no federal funding, and provides support resources for any student at the university.

The situation remains ongoing as the Department of Education prepares to launch its investigation. The outcome could have significant implications for UNR and its support programs for undocumented students.
