Ghost of Yotei: Is PlayStation Stuck in a Revenge Loop?
PlayStation's first-party exclusives have become synonymous with cinematic adventures and blockbuster storytelling. However, a growing sense of fatigue is setting in as many of these games seem to tread the same well-worn path, exploring similar themes of grief and revenge. The latest title, Ghost of Yotei, while praised for its combat and exploration, exemplifies this trend.
A Familiar Tale of Vengeance
In Ghost of Yotei, players take on the role of Atsu, driven by the desire to avenge the death of her parents. This journey of blood-soaked revenge across 17th-century Japan, as she hunts down 'The Yotei Six', bears a striking resemblance to other recent games, including Assassin's Creed Shadows. This recurring theme of revenge and meditations on grief has become a hallmark of PlayStation Studios in recent years.
The Last of Us Part 2: A Trailblazer
The Last of Us Part 2, released in 2020, set the stage for this trend, with Ellie's descent into darkness driven by vengeance. While these games are undeniably well-made, the lack of variety in storytelling is becoming increasingly noticeable.

A Brutal and Stunningly Beautiful Samurai Revenge Quest
Ghost of Yōtei, the follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, leans into its young protagonist’s thirst for bloody vengeance. The game is visually stunning and offers tense standoffs against formidable swordsmen, but it can also be unintentionally humorous due to player errors.
Despite its beauty, Ghost of Tsushima was criticized for being shallow and dour. It remains to be seen whether Ghost of Yotei can overcome these criticisms and offer a more compelling and varied experience.
