Novak Djokovic is back on the ATP Tour after a break since the US Open, and his first challenge at the Shanghai Masters is a familiar face: Marin Cilic. Cilic secured his spot against Djokovic by defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets. This sets the stage for their 22nd career meeting, with Djokovic holding a dominant 19-2 record.

Djokovic, currently ranked No. 3 in the Race to Turin, is aiming for a strong finish to the season. He's had a consistent year, reaching the semifinals of all four Grand Slams and the final of the Miami Masters. While he hasn't added to his Grand Slam tally this year, Shanghai presents a golden opportunity. The withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner's recent struggles in Beijing have potentially cleared Djokovic's path.

Djokovic boasts an impressive record at the Shanghai Masters, having won the title four times, more than any other player in the tournament's history. He's also remarkably consistent, never falling before the quarterfinal stage in his ten appearances. Last year, he was stopped by Jannik Sinner.

However, don't count Cilic out. While he's the underdog, if he can serve as well as he did in his opening round match, he could make things difficult for Djokovic. Cilic has two victories over Djokovic, one at the Paris Masters in 2016 and another at Queen's in 2018.

Bergs vs. Ruud: An Upset Brewing?

In other Shanghai Masters action, Zizou Bergs faces Casper Ruud. While Ruud has been in decent form, reaching the semifinals in Tokyo last week, Bergs is a solid hard-court player who enjoys fast courts. He upset Korda in the opening round and could pose a challenge to Ruud. Betting odds favor Ruud, but Bergs covering the games handicap could be a value bet.

Bublik Also in Action

Alexander Bublik is also competing at the Shanghai Masters.
