Massachusetts Lottery: $1 Million Winner Remains Anonymous
A lucky Massachusetts resident has struck gold, winning a cool $1 million in the state lottery. However, unlike many winners who bask in the public spotlight, this individual has chosen to remain anonymous, adding an element of mystery to their newfound wealth.
The Winning Ticket and the Trust Strategy
The winning ticket was a $10 scratch ticket from the "$4,000,000 Bonus Money" game, launched on September 10, 2024. The winning ticket was sold at a Nouria convenience store located at 1313 Boston Rd in Springfield. The store itself will receive a $10,000 bonus for its role in selling the fortunate ticket.
But how did the winner manage to keep their identity secret in a state that doesn't typically allow for anonymous wins? The answer lies in the power of trusts. The prize was claimed by the MK Miraculous Nominee Trust of Springfield, represented by trustee Thomas Bessette. The trust opted for a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes.
Massachusetts Lottery allows winners to create a trust, where a trustee claims the prize, receives the check and then deposits it into a bank account set up for the beneficiary. Mark William Bracken, Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery stated, "Prizes can be claimed by a trust or other legal entities that fulfill the definition of a legal person,” and that "The identity of the trustee or legal representative is made public. Over the last several years, we have seen an increase in the number of large prizes claimed by trusts.”
More Chances to Win Big
For those feeling inspired by this anonymous winner, there's still hope! As of June 6, there are still six $1 million prizes and two $4 million prizes remaining to be claimed in the "$4,000,000 Bonus Money" game.
