Life Sentences in Malta Journalist Murder: Justice Served?
VALLETTA, Malta – Robert Agius and Jamie Vella have been sentenced to life in prison for their role in supplying the bomb that killed Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. The sentencing marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the heinous crime that shocked Europe and triggered widespread protests against corruption in Malta.
Caruana Galizia, 53, was assassinated on October 16, 2017, by a car bomb detonated near her home. She was known for her fearless reporting on alleged corruption within Maltese political and business circles. At the time of her death, she was facing numerous libel suits related to her investigative work.
The Maksar Gang and the Murders
Agius and Vella, associated with the Maksar criminal gang, were convicted last week after a six-week trial. The jury reached an 8-1 verdict, finding them guilty of providing the explosive device that resulted in Caruana Galizia's death. They were also convicted in connection to the murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop, who was killed in 2015.
Madam Justice Edwina Grima emphasized the premeditated nature of both murders and acknowledged the profound impact they had on Maltese society. She handed down life sentences to Agius, Vella, Adrian Agius, and George Degiorgio.
Previous Convictions and Ongoing Investigations
George Degiorgio and his brother, Alfred Degiorgio, are already serving 40-year sentences after confessing to planting and detonating the bomb. Vincent Muscat received a 15-year sentence for his role in the murder and testified against the Degiorgios, Agius, and Vella after receiving a presidential pardon related to the Chircop murder.
Melvin Theuma, the confessed middleman, alleges that prominent businessman Yorgen Fenech commissioned the murder. Fenech denies the charges and is awaiting trial. Media references to him have been restricted to avoid influencing potential jurors.
