Google Tests AI-Powered Audio Overviews for Search Results
Google is experimenting with a new feature called Audio Overviews that brings AI-generated podcast-style discussions directly to search results. This initiative, currently available in the US for English-language searches through Google Labs, aims to provide users with an alternative way to consume and understand information.
How Audio Overviews Work
When you search for specific queries, such as “How do noise cancellation headphones work?”, Google may display a “Generate Audio Overview” button beneath the “People also ask” module. Clicking this button initiates the creation of a short audio clip, typically taking up to 40 seconds.
The resulting Audio Overview appears as an embedded player within the search results. This player includes standard controls like play, pause, mute, and playback speed adjustment. Notably, the audio features two AI-generated “hosts” who discuss the search topic in an engaging manner. Below the playback bar, you'll find links to the sources used to create the Audio Overview.
Expanding Audio Overview Capabilities
Google first introduced Audio Overviews in NotebookLM, its AI-based note-taking and research assistant. The feature has since expanded to Gemini and now to Google Search. This demonstrates Google's commitment to integrating AI-driven audio experiences across its platforms.
According to Google, Audio Overviews leverage its latest Gemini models. The company believes this feature provides a “convenient, hands-free way to absorb information whether you’re multitasking or simply prefer an audio experience.”
User Feedback and Future Development
Users can provide feedback on individual Audio Overviews through a thumbs up or thumbs down system. Google is also collecting feedback on the experiment as a whole via Labs. This user input will likely play a crucial role in refining and improving the feature's capabilities and broader adoption.
The integration of AI-generated audio into search represents a significant step in how we interact with information online. It remains to be seen how widely Google will roll out Audio Overviews and the impact this feature will have on user search behavior.
