In a move marking a significant departure from tradition, the NAACP has announced that it will not be inviting President Donald Trump to its national convention next month in Charlotte, North Carolina. This marks the first time in the organization's 116-year history that a sitting president has been excluded. The convention, themed “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” aims to address critical civil rights issues facing the nation.

NAACP President Explains the Decision

NAACP President Derrick Johnson addressed the media at a press conference, stating that the decision was motivated by President Trump's actions, which the organization believes are in direct conflict with its mission to advance civil rights. “Our job is to make democracy work and to fight and protect democracy, and there is a conflict in the things he has done, he is doing, and things that are being planned with our job,” Johnson explained.

A Break from Tradition

Historically, the NAACP has extended invitations to presidents from both Republican and Democratic parties, even when significant policy disagreements existed. Harry Truman was the first president to attend the NAACP's national convention in 1947. This decision to exclude President Trump underscores the gravity of the NAACP's concerns regarding his administration's policies and actions.

NAACP's Actions Against Trump's Policies

The NAACP has been actively challenging the Trump administration's policies through legal action. In April, the group filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education for allegedly withholding federal funding from schools that maintain diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The NAACP argued that this action unfairly restricts opportunities for Black students.

While President Trump was invited to the NAACP convention last year, he chose not to attend. Former President Joe Biden spoke at the 2024 convention in Las Vegas. The NAACP convention in Charlotte is expected to draw thousands of attendees and will be open to members of all political parties, excluding the current President.
