AI Stock Face-Off: Is BBAI or SOUN the Better Buy?
AI Stock Battle: BigBear.ai (BBAI) vs. SoundHound AI (SOUN)
Artificial intelligence continues to dominate investment conversations, and even smaller companies are benefiting. Two such examples are SoundHound AI (SOUN) and BigBear.ai (BBAI), both part of the Russell 2000 index. But which of these AI stocks provides more potential for investors?
SoundHound (SOUN), specializing in voice recognition and natural language processing, saw its stock price more than double in the past year thanks to strong revenue growth. BigBear.ai (BBAI) experienced a similar surge, gaining 180%. However, both stocks have faced volatility in 2025, with SOUN experiencing a steeper decline year-to-date.
SoundHound AI (SOUN): Strengths and Weaknesses
SoundHound reported impressive Q1 2025 revenue of $29.1 million, a 151% increase year-over-year. A key positive is its diversified client base, with no single customer accounting for more than 10% of its revenue. SoundHound’s independence gives customers more control compared to larger tech company platforms.
However, like many emerging tech firms, SoundHound is still burning cash and faces competition from giants like Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple's Siri. A weaker economy could also lead to reduced tech spending from key clients, impacting demand.
C3.ai (AI): A Disappointment in the AI Sector?
While many AI-related stocks have surged, C3.ai (AI) has struggled. The company's stock is down significantly from its all-time highs. C3.ai brands itself as an enterprise AI software company, but its business model differs from traditional software providers.
Instead of offering ready-made software, C3.ai focuses on custom software solutions for large clients. This approach, while attracting clients like energy companies and the U.S. Air Force, involves a large sales team and can be more difficult to scale profitably.
Ultimately, investors should weigh the potential of each company against their individual risk tolerance and investment goals.
