Jesse Marsch's Canada Takes Jab at USMNT Ahead of Gold Cup
Tensions are high as the CONCACAF Gold Cup approaches, and Jesse Marsch, the USA-born manager of the Canadian national team, has added fuel to the fire with comments seemingly aimed at the struggling USMNT. While Canada prepares with what Marsch calls their strongest possible roster, the USMNT faces scrutiny after recent losses and player absences.
The comments came after USA captain Christian Pulisic revealed his decision to skip recent friendlies in anticipation of the Gold Cup. In contrast, Marsch stated emphatically that none of his Canadian players expressed any reluctance to participate. "Not one guy called me and said, ‘Coach, it’s been a long year, maybe I don’t come.’ Not even close to that conversation,” Marsch told the media on Thursday.
The USMNT suffered defeats in both friendlies, including a humiliating 4-0 loss to Switzerland. Pulisic's absence, coupled with other key players missing due to the Club World Cup and injuries, has dampened optimism surrounding the team. Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Florian Balogun, Segeino Dest, and Yunus Musah are among the notable absentees.
Canada recently played a goalless draw against Ivory Coast which they lost in a shootout, they will face Honduras at BC Place on Tuesday. Honduras won 2-0 against Antigua & Barbuda in their World Cup qualification run last week. Canada will be without captain Alphonso Davies due to a cruciate ligament tear and Sam Adekugbe is sidelined.
The USMNT, under pressure due to lackluster results, is gearing up for their first Gold Cup match against Trinidad and Tobago. The pressure is mounting on manager Mauricio Pochettino as he attempts to navigate the tournament with a team missing several key players, while Jesse Marsch and Canada appear confident and ready to compete.
