The Boston Red Sox have optioned infielder/outfielder Kristian Campbell to Triple-A Worcester, according to reports. This move comes as outfielder Wilyer Abreu is expected to be activated from the injured list. The Red Sox are looking to shake things up after a period of inconsistent performance.
Campbell's Promising Start and Subsequent Slump
Campbell had a meteoric rise through the minor leagues in 2024, boasting an impressive .330/.439/.558 slash line. This performance propelled him up prospect rankings and earned him a spot on the Red Sox's Opening Day roster in 2025. The team showed their commitment to him by signing him to an eight-year, $60 million extension in early April.
Initially, Campbell lived up to the hype, hitting .313/.420/.515 through April 29th. However, his performance has since declined significantly, with his batting average plummeting to .154/.236/.215 in recent weeks. His strikeout rate has also increased, while his walk rate has decreased.
Defensive Struggles Contribute to Demotion
Campbell's defensive performance at second base has also been a concern.
