Tigers manager A.J. Hinch explained that the decision was ultimately up to Skubal, who preferred to pitch in the first game. “I go to Tarik Skubal and I’m like, ‘Hey, what game do you want?’ He’s like, ‘Game 1.’ I’m like, ‘Cool.’ And then he gets Game 1, regardless of whether Skenes is pitching or not.”
While the players may not have been overly concerned, the potential matchup was undeniably intriguing. Skenes boasts a stellar 1.78 ERA and has racked up 50 strikeouts in his recent outings. Skubal, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, sports a 1.99 ERA and ranks fourth in MLB with 111 strikeouts.
Though the head-to-head duel didn't materialize this time, the possibility remains for future encounters between these two talented hurlers. Until then, fans can only imagine what might have been.
