The 2025 KPMG Women's PGA Championship witnessed an unexpected and unfortunate turn of events for PGA teaching professional Heather Angell. Angell, who earned her spot through the Colebridge Financial Team, was disqualified due to a rare scorecard error during the first round.

Scorecard Snafu Leads to Disqualification

Angell, the director of instruction at the Golf Club at Fiddler’s Creek in Naples, Florida, had a golden opportunity to compete in a major championship. However, her journey was cut short when she signed an incorrect scorecard. According to Rule 3.3b(3), a player must ensure the accuracy of their scorecard. Angell mistakenly recorded a 5 on the par-5 16th hole when her actual score was a 6.

Despite the challenging conditions of the Fields Ranch East course at PGA Frisco, where only a handful of players finished under par in the first round, Angell struggled to an 87 (+15). The incorrect scorecard entry sealed her fate, leading to her disqualification.

How Angell Earned Her Spot

Angell secured her place in the KPMG Women's PGA Championship through her performance at the 2024 LPGA Professionals National Championship, where she finished fifth. This achievement placed her on the Colebridge Financial Team, granting her a coveted tee time at the major.

The error serves as a reminder of the importance of meticulous record-keeping in golf, even at the highest levels of competition. The demanding nature of major championships leaves little room for error, both on and off the course.

Angell, a former UNC player who competed professionally from 2003 to 2019, also received the South Florida PGA Southwest Teacher of the Year award in 2021 and 2024.
