US Weighs Options as Israel Targets Iranian Commanders Amid Rising Tensions
Tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate as Israel and Iran exchange strikes, marking the second week of intensified conflict. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have claimed responsibility for the killing of two commanders from Iran’s elite Quds Force, alleging strikes against various Iranian military targets. Simultaneously, Israel faced a rare breach of its air defenses by two Iranian drones.
Israeli Strikes Target Hamas Support
The IDF announced the killing of Saeed Izadi, commander of the Palestine Corps in the Quds Force, in an early Saturday strike in Qom. Izadi was accused of orchestrating the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for years supported Hamas with funding and weapons.
Evidence Found in Gaza Command Center
Following the death of Mohammed Sinwar, head of Hamas’ armed wing, an IDF and Israel Security Agency (ISA) operation uncovered an underground command center in Gaza. Documents found within revealed contact between Hamas’ military wing, including Sinwar, and Izadi, detailing plans for Izadi to supply Hamas with millions of dollars in weapons.
US Considers Response Options
Amidst the escalating conflict, multiple US B-2 bombers are reportedly heading towards Guam. US defense officials stated that while this movement doesn't signify an imminent operation, it aims to provide President Trump with options for a potential strike on Iran. This comes as the US closely monitors the situation and considers its strategic response.
Diplomatic Efforts Underway
While military actions intensify, diplomatic efforts are also in motion. Iran's president has expressed a willingness to negotiate after a call with his French counterpart but maintains that the country will not halt its nuclear activities. Iran's foreign minister also engaged in talks in Turkey following a summit with European officials that yielded no significant breakthroughs.
