Memphis Airport Could Be Renamed After FedEx Founder Fred Smith

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority is considering a proposal to rename Memphis International Airport after the late FedEx founder, Fred Smith. This potential change comes after Smith's recent passing on June 21st at the age of 80.

Jack Sammons, an Airport Authority board member, is spearheading the initiative and plans to formally propose the name change at the upcoming board meeting on June 26th. Sammons has been a long-time advocate for honoring Smith's contributions to Memphis and the world.

Sammons shared an amusing anecdote about a previous attempt to honor Smith decades ago. Smith reportedly told Sammons he preferred building naming ceremonies be reserved for the deceased, humorously threatening him if he proceeded while he was still alive.

FAA Approval and Timeline

While the renaming process requires approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Sammons remains optimistic that the process can be expedited. He believes Smith's extensive network and respected reputation in Washington, D.C., will facilitate a smooth approval process.

“I bet with all the admiration and respect (Smith) had in Washington, D.C., that this would be a ball that’s rolling down the hill with rapid momentum," Sammons stated.

Smith's Impact on Memphis

Michael Keeney, chairman of the Airport Authority, released a statement expressing condolences to the Smith family and FedEx, acknowledging Smith as an innovator and highlighting his profound impact on the community.

The potential renaming of Memphis International Airport would serve as a lasting tribute to Fred Smith's legacy and his significant contributions to the city's economy and global connectivity.
