The San Francisco Giants have made a roster move, recalling right-handed pitcher Carson Seymour from Triple-A Sacramento. This move comes as Sean Hjelle has been optioned to Triple-A. For Seymour, this is a significant moment as he is set to make his Major League Baseball debut as soon as he steps onto the field.
Seymour, aged 26, was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB draft. His journey to the Giants came as part of a trade in 2022, which saw Darin Ruf head to the Mets and J.D. Davis join the Giants. Since then, Seymour has steadily progressed through the minor league system, showcasing consistent performance.
In 2023, Seymour spent the season primarily as a starter for the Double-A team. Over 23 starts and five relief appearances, he pitched 112 2/3 innings, maintaining an impressive earned run average of 3.99. He demonstrated his ability to strike out batters, with a strikeout rate of 24.5%, while also inducing ground balls at a rate of 49.5%. His performance continued at the Triple-A level, where he logged 134 1/3 innings with similar statistics: a 22.1% strikeout rate, a 10.1% walk rate, and a 53.5% ground ball rate.
The Giants protected Seymour from the Rule 5 draft by adding him to their 40-man roster in November of last year. This year, he has continued his solid performance, pitching 74 innings over 15 starts with a 3.89 ERA, a 25.6% strikeout rate, an 11.4% walk rate, and a 53.6% ground ball rate.
Baseball America ranks Seymour as the #18 prospect in the Giants organization, highlighting his effective two-seam fastball for generating ground balls and his slider as a swing-and-miss pitch. However, they also note concerns about his inconsistent changeup, suggesting a potential future as a middle reliever. FanGraphs is more optimistic, ranking him #6 in the system at the beginning of the year, believing his sinker is effective against left-handed hitters, increasing his chances of remaining a starter.
For the immediate future, Seymour's call-up is likely intended to provide the Giants with a fresh arm in the bullpen, especially considering they are currently in the midst of a demanding stretch of games.
