Nissan is initiating a massive recall affecting nearly 443,900 vehicles in the United States due to a potentially critical engine flaw. The recall impacts specific models across both the Nissan and Infiniti brands. The affected vehicles include the 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2020 Nissan Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50, and 2022 Infiniti QX55.

What's the Problem?

According to a recall report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the engine bearings in these vehicles may have a "manufacturing defect." This defect could lead to significant engine damage and, in the worst-case scenario, complete engine failure. The issue is specifically linked to vehicles equipped with either a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter or a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter variable compression turbo engine.

How to Know if Your Car is Affected

Owners of affected vehicles might notice several warning signs indicating a problem with their engine bearings. These include:

  • An unusual or "abnormal noise" coming from the engine compartment.
  • Rough engine running or performance issues.
  • Illumination of malfunction indicator lights on the dashboard.
  • Warning messages appearing on the instrument cluster.

What Nissan is Doing About It

Nissan has stated that this recall is part of their "ongoing commitment to customer safety." The company plans to notify owners of affected vehicles beginning August 22, 2025, with instructions on how to bring their vehicle to a Nissan dealer for inspection and repair. Dealership service technicians will inspect the oil pans for debris. If debris is found, Nissan will either repair or replace the engine. If no debris is found, dealers will replace the engine oil (and, in the case of 1.5 liter 3-cylinder vehicles, the oil pan gasket, as well as reprogramming the engine control module).

A similar recall is also underway in Canada, affecting over 37,800 vehicles with the same engine-related issue.

What Should You Do?

If you own one of the affected Nissan or Infiniti models, it's crucial to stay informed. Watch for the notification letter from Nissan arriving after August 22, 2025. In the meantime, if you experience any of the warning signs mentioned above, contact your local Nissan dealer immediately to schedule an inspection. Don't delay, as engine failure can pose a serious safety risk.
