Fatal Crash Shuts Down I-70 Westbound in Downtown Indianapolis

Indianapolis, IN - A fatal crash involving a semi tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the North Split in downtown Indianapolis on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. and resulted in one death.

According to Indiana State Police, a preliminary investigation suggests the semi-truck driver braked suddenly, causing a load of plywood to spill from the flatbed trailer. Tragically, the driver of the semi was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of I-70 as it approaches I-65, an area commonly referred to as the North Split.

Troopers are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the possibility that another vehicle may have abruptly changed lanes in front of the semi, contributing to the incident. The investigation led to a complete closure of the westbound lanes of I-70 for several hours, causing significant traffic delays in the downtown area.

Authorities are urging drivers to seek alternate routes and exercise caution in the area as the investigation continues. Further updates will be provided as they become available.

This incident follows a separate crash in Madison County, where one person died and five were injured, highlighting the importance of safe driving practices on Indiana roadways.
