Colorado Under Alert! Severe Storms & Heatwave Incoming!
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Denver metro and eastern Colorado until 9 p.m. MDT. Residents should prepare for scattered storms along the I-25 corridor, intensifying as they move eastward.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch Details
The severe thunderstorm watch encompasses several counties, including Adams, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, El Paso, Elbert, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Weld, and Yuma. These storms could bring winds up to 75 mph and hail up to 2 inches in diameter.
Earlier reports indicated a possible landspout near Bennett and Watkins, with a special weather statement issued until 3:30 p.m. However, no hail was expected during that period. A thunderstorm warning was also in effect until 5:15 p.m., warning of winds up to 60 mph near U.S. 34 close to Yuma and Eckley, with the possibility of half-dollar-sized hail.
Heatwave on the Horizon
Adding to the weather concerns, the Eastern Plains are bracing for a heatwave later this week. Temperatures are expected to reach near 100 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, creating potentially dangerous conditions, especially for vulnerable populations.
Ozone Alert for Front Range
Furthermore, ozone levels may reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups across the Front Range on Monday, including in Denver. Individuals with lung disease, such as asthma, and active children are advised to limit their time outdoors to avoid respiratory symptoms and breathing discomfort.
