Surprise checks are making their way to Illinois residents this summer! As part of the state's Enhanced Money Match program, nearly 600,000 people will receive checks, returning unclaimed money without the hassle of filing claims.
$45 Million Being Returned
The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office is distributing a total of $45 million through this initiative. State Treasurer Michael Frerichs emphasizes that these checks are legitimate and the money rightfully belongs to the recipients.
"The first thing we tell people, is this – the money belongs to you, the check is real, and this is not a scam," Frerichs stated. "The second thing we tell them, is to cash the check! Who couldn’t use a little extra pocket money this summer?"
Who Gets a Check?
While most checks are for $50 or less, some residents with multiple claims will receive larger amounts. Notification letters were sent out in late June, and checks will continue to arrive throughout the summer.
Enhanced Money Match Program Success
Since its inception in 2018, the Enhanced Money Match program has successfully returned over $130 million to more than 870,000 individuals in Illinois.
