The New York Mets have announced a flurry of roster moves, including the reinstatement of outfielder/designated hitter Jesse Winker from the 60-day injured list. Winker's return comes as outfielder Starling Marte heads to the 10-day injured list with a right knee bruise, retroactive to July 7th.
To make room for Winker on the 40-man roster, right-hander Tylor Megill has been transferred to the 60-day IL. The Mets have also selected the contract of right-hander Alex Carrillo and designated righty Zach Pop for assignment. Additionally, the Mets have signed right-hander Junior Fernández to a minor league deal.
Winker's Bounceback and Return
Jesse Winker, 31, enjoyed a strong bounceback season with the Mets in 2024, posting a .253/.360/.405 slash line and a 118 wRC+ after a disappointing 2023. This performance led to a one-year, $7.5 million deal. This year, before an oblique strain sidelined him, he hit .239/.321/.418 in 24 games. After missing over two months, he's now ready to contribute in the corner outfield and designated hitter roles.
Marte's Injury and the DH Shuffle
Starling Marte's injury history includes a previous stint on the IL last year due to a right knee bone bruise. This season, he's batting .270/.353/.387 with a 116 wRC+. With Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo, and Tyrone Taylor regularly in the outfield, Marte has primarily filled the DH role, which Winker will now assume. The differing batting sides (Marte is a righty, Winker a lefty) may influence the Mets' lineup decisions based on the opposing pitcher.
Megill's Timeline
Tylor Megill was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 15th due to a right elbow sprain. His 60-day count is retroactive to that date, making him eligible for reinstatement in mid-August. While he has resumed throwing, the Mets appear to be managing expectations regarding his immediate return.
