Planning a European summer getaway, a Mediterranean cruise, or even a winter holiday abroad? You've probably booked flights, accommodation, and meticulously planned your itinerary. But have you considered adding a flu shot to your pre-travel checklist? Experts are urging travelers heading to Europe, North Africa, the USA, and the Far East to consider getting vaccinated against the flu, even if they've already had a shot earlier this year.

Why Another Flu Shot?

Jack Janetzki, a lecturer in pharmacy and pharmacology at the University of South Australia, explains that the effectiveness of a flu shot received in April or May might wane by the time you travel in July or later. A second shot provides optimal protection against the flu while traveling in the northern hemisphere.

Cruises and Peak Flu Season

Janetzki particularly recommends a jab for travel during peak flu season, which starts around October. He advises getting the shot at least two weeks before departure to allow the body time to build immunity.

  • Cruises: These are prime settings for flu outbreaks due to the close proximity of hundreds or thousands of people in confined spaces like restaurants.
  • Southern Hemisphere Travel: If you're traveling to Australia or other parts of the southern hemisphere now, a flu vaccine is essential as it's their peak flu season.

Getting Your Flu Shot

While the NHS flu jab system in the UK primarily operates during flu season (autumn onwards), your GP can advise you on how to get a jab at any time of the year if you deem it necessary. Don't let the flu ruin your dream vacation. Prioritize your health and well-being by considering a travel vaccine before you go!
