Dolly Parton: Songwriting on Hold After Husband's Passing. What's Next?
Country music legend Dolly Parton is taking a break from writing new music following the death of her husband, Carl Dean, who passed away in March at the age of 82. Parton, 79, recently spoke with Khloé Kardashian on her podcast, "Khloé in Wonder Land," about her grief and its impact on her creative process.
A Pause for Healing
"Several things I’ve wanted to start, but I can’t do it," Parton explained. "I will later, but I’m just coming up with such wonderful, beautiful ideas. But I think I won’t finish it. I can’t do it right now, because I got so many other things and I can’t afford the luxury of getting that emotional right now."
Parton emphasized the deep connection she feels to songwriting, stating, "Everything begins with a story or a song. I think that’s one of the reasons I love to write, because I feel like I’m so connected to God right then."
Tribute and Remembrance
Shortly after Dean's death, Parton released the single "If You Hadn’t Been There" as a heartfelt tribute to her late husband. She shared on Instagram, "Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story." The song's cover featured a cherished photo of a young Parton embracing Dean.
Las Vegas Residency on the Horizon
While new music may be on hold, Parton has announced an upcoming residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. "I haven’t worked Vegas in years and I’ve always loved singing there," she said in a statement. The shows are scheduled to begin in December, marking her return to the Las Vegas stage after 32 years.
