Phillies Reload Bullpen: Familiar Face Returns for Playoff Push!
The Philadelphia Phillies are bolstering their bullpen as the MLB trade deadline looms! In a move that may surprise some, Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski has brought back a familiar face: right-handed reliever David Robertson.
Robertson Returns for Third Stint
This marks Robertson's third stint with the Phillies, having previously played for the team in 2019 and 2022. After a strong 2024 season with the Texas Rangers, where he recorded 99 strikeouts in 72 innings with a 3.00 ERA, Robertson remained unsigned. The Phillies have signed him to a prorated one-year, $16 million contract, meaning he'll earn just over $6 million for the remainder of the season.
Robertson has been optioned to Lehigh Valley to build up his arm strength. Dombrowski noted that Robertson's metrics are consistent with his past performance, and the team is confident he can contribute to their playoff push. "We know he can handle a pennant race. We know he can handle post season play," Dombrowski stated.
Red Sox Miss Out
The Boston Red Sox were also in the running for Robertson, even sending key personnel to scout him. However, the Phillies ultimately won out, adding a veteran arm to their bullpen. With Robertson's experience and proven track record, the Phillies are hoping he can be a valuable asset down the stretch.
What This Means for the Phillies
The addition of David Robertson provides the Phillies with much-needed bullpen depth as they contend for a playoff spot. His experience in high-pressure situations will be invaluable, and his ability to strike out batters will be a welcome addition to the team's pitching staff. The Phillies are betting that Robertson can regain his form quickly and contribute to a successful playoff run.
