Former President Donald Trump has once again ignited controversy by calling for the arrest of California Senator Adam Schiff. Trump's accusations center around alleged mortgage fraud and come amidst a flurry of accusations and counter-accusations between the two political figures.
Trump's Truth Social Attack
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to launch a scathing attack on Schiff, accusing him of falsifying loan documents and engaging in mortgage fraud. He claims that Schiff dishonestly claimed a home in suburban Maryland was his primary residence to obtain more favorable loan terms. Trump stated, "Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff is in BIG TROUBLE! He falsified Loan Documents."
These accusations follow earlier claims by Trump that he received a tip-off from Fannie Mae, alleging that Schiff engaged in "mortgage fraud." He added, "I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook."
Schiff's Response and the FHFA Referral
Schiff has denied any wrongdoing, responding on X (formerly Twitter) and refuting Trump's claims. However, the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) reportedly sent a letter to the Department of Justice in May, raising concerns about Schiff's alleged falsification of bank documents and property records. The FHFA oversees Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Bank System.
The Russia Collusion Angle
Trump's recent attacks also invoke the debunked Russia collusion narrative. He accuses Schiff, who led the first impeachment push against him as chair of the House Intelligence Committee, of manufacturing a "scam" related to Russia and the 2016 election. Trump insists his son "did nothing wrong" and that Schiff should face prison for a "real crime."
