The company confirmed that the outage, which began on June 7th, was initiated to contain a cybersecurity threat. Importantly, Erie Insurance stated, "there is no evidence" of a breach of sensitive personal information, financial records, or legally protected data.
"Key services and systems have been safely and securely restored and our local agents, claims teams, and customer care teams have returned to regular ways of serving customers," the company announced on July 7th.
Scattered Spider Suspected in Cyber Incident
While Erie Insurance hasn't publicly identified the source of the cyberattack, Google Threat Intelligence Group has suggested that the hacking group known as Scattered Spider is likely responsible. This group appears to have shifted its focus from retailers to insurance companies, potentially targeting both Erie Insurance and Philadelphia Insurance, which also experienced a similar network outage around the same time.
